IMCLC – International Medical Contact Lens Council as a global acting nonpolitical umbrella society, represents modernity in communication between organizations of each continent and associated companies. Furthermore, in order to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about eye health and, in particular, for the correct use of contact lenses and their interaction with ocular surface and physiology.

What We do

Each of the participating societies provide representatives to the IMCLC who provide guidance for the IMCLC educational program at the ICO. In recent years the ICO has increased the timing of its meeting from every four years to every two years, keeping the IMCLC Leadership very busy with planning for the contact lens presentations.

Which hygiene products work well or not so well?

There is no simple recommendation, only the contact lens expert can make it. It depends on the contact lens material, the wearing time, the wearing time, the environment in which the contact lenses are worn, etc.

What to do in case of fungal infections of the cornea?

There are preparations with a test and weighting on the Internet. Caution: not all preparations are suitable for all contact lens materials. In principle, it has been learned from earlier studies that hygiene preparations with additives disinfect less well.

Moisten contact lenses, use aqueous artificial tear fluid, possibly reduce wearing time

UV radiation – eye – contact lenses

Contact lenses should contain a UV blocker, but the face around the eye is not protected, so always use extra sunglasses.

How quickly can keratitis occur?

For some bacterial strains within hours, Acanthamoeba and fungi have a longer latency.

What to do if keratitis is suspected?

Consult an ophthalmologist immediately, initiate diagnostics and therapy, don't let any time pass.

What pathogens cause bacterial keratitis?

Mostly bacteria, but also Acanthamoeba and fungi.

What to do with special lenses that cannot be replaced so quickly?

Immediately perform a complete hygiene cycle after exercise.

Remedy and prevention of keratitis in summer

Swimming without contact lenses. If not possible, then better one-day lenses. After swimming, new contact lenses, dispose of lenses.

What are the symptoms of microbial keratitis?

The eye is dark red, painful, visual acuity is reduced, there is often a purulent discharge.

Contact lenses in summer

Heat, water, swimming, showering – with contact lenses? According to a press release by the ophthalmologists at the University Eye Clinic in Düsseldorf, there is a risk of developing microbial keratitis. The statistics speak of 2.25 cases / 10000 contact lens wearers.
